Hello,
I recently got my brick fencer and front of the house rendered to sand finish.
I'm hoping to paint the fencer and wall in light grey / off-white colour and wanted to get advice on preparation.
1. How long should I let the rendered fencer and wall cure for?
2. What sort of sealant / primer should I be using? The bottom of the fence will be buried underground by approximately 150mm of dirt / grass.
3. Any specific paint I should use for external use?
Thank you.
Hello @Song
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your external rendered wall.
I recommend waiting for a minimum of six weeks to allow the render to cure properly and let all the moisture in the wall to get out. However, should you experience a spot of rain, I recommend adding a few extra days just to make sure that the wall is totally dry and is not damp from the rain. If the bottom of the fence is still exposed, I suggest using Gripset Betta 1L Waterproofing Membrane Bitumen Rubber. My best advice is to paint only up to the surface level and to make sure not to overpaint past this point. The reason for this is that you can't paint over bitumen paint. Once the bitumen paint cures you can then cover it back with soil.
If the wall hasn’t been previously painted, proper surface preparation is key to ensure the best result. For new or unpainted cement render, it’s important to first apply a primer like Dulux 1L PRECISION White Sealer Binder. This will seal the surface, improve adhesion of the topcoat, and prevent any chalking or flaking over time. Once the primer has dried, you can apply two coats of Weathershield, ensuring even coverage.
In regards to the type of paint to use, I suggest using the Dulux 4L Vivid White Gloss Weathershield Exterior Paint. It has UV protection, plus it helps resist mould, dirt and stains.
