Wondering if you can help. Just moved to new unit. The wooden window frames blistered in winter. I had to replace the glass because it scratched and pitted. They now need complete paint. Please tell me what I need to do. I was told the tan or light brown oil or paint because of colour will blister. I have ti stick to the light brown. I already have Dulux primer, undercoat in white in oil based I bought from you.would like to use this.
Hello @shirley1231
I suggest getting a resealable sandwich bag and taking off large pieces of flaking paint and sealing it in the bag. This is on the condition that you want to repaint the window frame in the same colour as the original. Bring the paint chips to the store and ask the paint specialist for a paint match. But if you are painting it a different colour, you can disregard the paint matching step.
In order to repaint the window frame, the general steps are to sand the surface of the timber frame and remove all the old flaking paint on the surface. I suggest investing in a detail sander such as the Ozito 200W Detail Sander to shorten the sanding time. My best advice is to make sure that the sandpaper is properly secure on the surface of the sanding pad. Please note that working around glass is dangerous an accidental hit with a tool or when too much force is used can make the glass shatter and cause injury. Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask.
Once all the flaking loose paint has been removed, the next step is to mask the glass window to prevent over painting. When everything is ready you can now paint the timber surface with primer and then the topcoat of your choice.
Here is a handy step-by-step guide: How To Paint Timber Window Frames (the techniques used are applicable to your project)
