Re: security door peeling

Hi @shirley1231,

Thank you for your question about restoring the paint on your security door.

With any paint project, preparation is the most important step to ensure a quality finish. Begin by inspecting the door to identify all areas where paint is peeling or flaking. Use a plastic scraper to gently remove any loose paint, taking care not to damage the aluminium surface. For stubborn sections, lightly sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper such as this 240 Grit Sandpaper to smooth edges and create a uniform surface for the new coating. Wash the entire door with warm water mixed with sugar soap to remove dust, grease, and contaminants, then rinse thoroughly. Allow the door to dry completely before moving on to priming.

Apply a metal primer specifically formulated for aluminium surfaces, such as this Dulux Metalshield All Surface Primer Grey. This type of primer ensures strong adhesion between the bare metal and the topcoat, preventing future peeling and corrosion. Use a small paintbrush for detailed areas and a mini roller for the larger sections to achieve an even finish. Allow the primer to dry fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions — typically a few hours — before applying any paint. If needed to remove any lumps or bumps, lightly sand the primer once dry to ensure a smooth, even surface.

Once primed, apply two coats of a high-quality exterior paint suitable for metal, such as Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel. Apply the first coat evenly using a brush or roller, ensuring no drips or heavy build-up. Let it dry completely before applying the second coat for a durable, even finish.

You might like to check out How To Paint Metal for some further guidance. As you don't have rust, these steps are not necessary, but the rest of the advice applies.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Jacob
