How to re-stain timber poles and beams?

I am looking to restain our bush poles (pine) and beams (glam) on the front and back of our house. It hasn’t been done since we built in 2017 and it is beginning to fade and some of the beams show signs of bubbling/ cracking. I am not sure where to start and whether I would need to sand these right back before I reapply the stain. Thanks.

Re-staining your timber poles and beams is a great way to refresh their appearance and protect them. Since it’s been a few years since they were last stained, you don’t necessarily need to sand the timber entirely back, but it can be helpful to sand areas that show signs of bubbling or deterioration. To start, I’d recommend picking up some stain that matches your desired finish and testing it on a small, inconspicuous section of the timber. This will give you a good idea of how the new stain will look over the existing surface and help you assess whether it will blend well with the faded areas.

If you’re happy with the results of the test patch, you can then move forward with re-staining the entire surface. Clean the rest of the beams and poles thoroughly to remove dirt and dust before applying the new stain. Applying a fresh coat of stain should restore the timber’s appearance and protect it from the elements, especially if the previous coating has started to degrade. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the stain and allow adequate drying time between coats if needed.
