How to repair cracks and clean stains on exterior wall?

Hi everyone,

I want to repaint my exterior wall but it has many hairline cracks and black dirt patches. There’s also a large section of damage along the driveway edge. I’m hoping to get some advice on:

  1. Which materials or products should I buy to fill the small gaps and hairline cracks in the rendered wall before repainting?
  2. What kind of material should I use to repair the larger broken section along the driveway edge?
  3. What’s the best way to clean the black dirt/mould on the wall? Some people suggest using a high-pressure water cleaner, but others say that could damage the existing coating and that these black marks are mould, so an external cleaning solution would be better. What do you recommend?IMG_6558.jpgIMG_6564.jpgIMG_6563.jpgIMG_6562.jpgIMG_6561.jpgIMG_6560.jpgIMG_6559.jpgIMG_6804.JPG

Thanks!

Re: How to repair cracks and clean black stains on exterior wall to prepare for paint?

Hello @qnp

Thank you for sharing your question about repairing cracks on your exterior wall. I propose washing the surface with 30 Seconds 5L Outdoor Cleaner Concentrate to remove any moss mould or mildew that may settled on the surface. You can use your garden hose to rinse the surface; there is no need to use a pressure washer which might damage the surface further. I recommend using the Oates Long Handle Deck Scrub Brush to help with cleaning the surface.

One of our fantastic community members, @Nailbag has written an article that will guide you through this repair. Check out How to repair a rendered wall for a step-by-step guide on how to fix this crack. You may also use this option to repair the larger damaged section on your driveway. In the repair guide it was suggested to use Polyfilla 500g Exterior Brick and Render Masonry to patch the damage on the render.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
