How to repair flaking timber panels?

Can I please get some advice on how to repair my peeling/flaking timber panels?
I’m not sure whether to sand it back or use a paint stripper (especially with the ribbed panels), an then the best way to apply a new stain (brush, roller, rag) and how to make it last in the harsh Perth sun.

Are you aware of what type of coating was originally used on the panels? It would typically have been either a water-based oil or a varnish. From the level of peeling in your photos, I’d suspect it was a varnish, as that type of coating tends to flake once it starts to break down from sun exposure.

Unfortunately, once a varnish begins to deteriorate, it really needs to be sanded back to bare timber before you can reapply a new coat.

That’s going to be a bit tricky with those ribbed panels. You can sand the flat surfaces back fairly easily, but the grooves will be harder to reach. For those, a light sand to remove any loose or flaking material followed by recoating might be the most practical option. It won’t be perfect, but it should help restore the appearance and give the finish a better chance of holding. Any areas that are heavily peeling should be taken back to fresh timber for the best result.

When you apply your new coating, a brush is ideal for getting into the grooves and achieving an even finish, though a roller can be useful for covering the flatter sections.

As for longevity, unfortunately, there’s no real way to make varnish last much longer harsh sun. Regular maintenance is key. Keep an eye out for early signs of wear and touch up as needed to prevent the finish from flaking again.

How long did the current coating last before it started to peel? That might help determine whether a different type of finish, such as an exterior oil, could be a better option next time. With oils, you simply need to apply a new coat periodically, rather than having to sand back the deteriorated varnish coating.

I am not sure what coating was originally used or how long it’s lasted, as we bought this house last year.

Sounds like sanding back and then oil is the way to go. Cheers for your help. I’ll try and talk the missus into painting it in the long term.
