How to repair outdoor synthetic rattan lounge?

Hi everyone,

I’ve got an outdoor synthetic rattan lounge that is deteriorating in the sun. It’s mostly just affecting the arms (see picture). Does anyone have a creative idea to cover or fix this?

The arms are ever so curved, maybe some wood covers or something?

You might like to check out the previous similar discussions on this topic as synthetic rattan does break down after time. You'll likely find some great tips within those topics. I like your idea of using timber, which is something that I've mentioned before. Just some rectangular sections over the armrests will improve the look immediately. Depending on the width of the armrest some 64 x 19mm 2.4m DAR Pine Premium might suit.

You'll need to check the structure under the armrests to determine appropriate fixing locations.

Remember to coat them with an exterior varnish or paint for protection.

Thanks @MitchellMc that sounds good, how would you go about attaching the wood to the armchair?

Dimensions are 80mm x 600mm across the top.

Or would you just attach sides so it just sits flush against the arm and not bother attaching?

That would depend on what the underlying frame is made from @milch92 and whether you can gain access to that area. It would be best to screw through the frame and up into the bottom of the timber armrest. Alternatively, if you need to screw from the top down, you could fill the screw holes after attachment.

Since it is 80mm wide, you'd need to go for the 89 x 19mm 1.8m DAR Pine Premium - 1.8m.

You could potentially create a C-shaped armrest that slots over the existing one.

Hi again,

checking what you think of painting the timber with Cabothane Clear Oil based finish. I already have this at home. It will be out in the weather (rain, sun, wind)? I’ve attached a photo.

Or am I better off with a different product?

Hi @milch92,

Unfortunately, that's an interior product and is not suitable for external use. However, I have picked up on some conflicting information, which you might have, too, that suggests it is suitable for exterior use. This is not the case, and I've confirmed and flagged this with Cabot's to correct.

I'd recommend you use Cabot's 500ml Matt Water Based Exterior Clear - 500ml.
