How to replace window bottom rail and sill?

Hi

The  bottom rail and sill of my window was rotted quite badly. I have cut it out using a multitool.

Is it better to repair the bottom rail (wood hardener and wood filler) or replace it completely given the condition ? If replacing, how do I replace the bottom rail - particularly where the bottom rail meets the glass pane. (There is a small groove in the existing bottom rail for slotting against the glass)

This is the bottom of window where I cut out the bottom rail and sill (I have not yet completely removed the sill part - but underneath is completely rotted, so I plan to replace it)

This is the condition of the bottom rail (there is a groove for slotting in the glass - how would I make that in a new piece of bottom rail ?):

thank you !

Hello @jnhome

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your windows bottom rail.

Because the bottom rail of your window frame is severely damaged, patching it will no longer be an option. It will be necessary to purchase a similar piece of timber to repair the framework of the window. Generally speaking, part of the side sections of the window frame will need to be cut and replaced as well. But if you happen to find a window frame with the same profile then it would be easier to replace the entire side completely.

Let me tag our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

Re: Replace Window Bottom Rail and Sill

Hi @jnhome

Unfortunately just going by the photos the timber looks like powder, which means it's well beyond repair as @EricL mentioned. I would recommend getting a few quotes on a total replacement.

Re: Replace Window Bottom Rail and Sill

Good Morning @jnhome

Looking at the state of the timber and where the cut points are I am heading towards replacing the window overall. Trying to square off the sides with the glass still in the frame will be resonably hard.

Removing the window frame, taking the glass out and then making a new frame is possible and would be an interesting project. However unless you are proficent in timberwork I would go the route of replacing the timber window itself. I would also verify of any of the sill area has rotted as thats a responable amont of rot and where you find some, there is usually other areas to take care of as well.

I would get a couple of quotes from a glazier or carpenter if you are unsure of how accurate timber work you do. (not knocking any work but this is something I would be heading towards a professional to fix)
