How to restain a patchy deck?

Hi,

We have a deck which has previously been stained. It has started to flake in some areas so in need of a restain. We have water blasted the flaky parts off, used a deck cleaner to clean it however there is still some parts where the stain has not been removed. Do I need to remove completely all the previous stain before restaining? The parts that are still there are very well stuck on. We will restain with exactly the same colour and type of stain.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @sarah1011. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about restoring a deck.

The coating on your deck is heavily deteriorated, and ideally, decks should be recoated yearly to maintain the finish—sometimes even twice a year in harsher conditions. Since the existing stain is already flaking and worn in areas, our supplier’s advice would be to sand the deck back to bare timber before applying a fresh coat.

While you could choose to overcoat the existing stain, there’s no guarantee that the new coat will hold up if the old layer continues to degrade and flake away over time. Sanding will ensure a more even, long-lasting result.
