How to stop water leaking out of gutters?

Hi everyone! I have a small issue with my gutter—it’s not clogged but water seems to drip out. I’ve checked for blockages, but everything seems clear. I’ve captured a video showing the problem. Looking for some DIY advice on how to fix this. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for sharing your questions about your leaking gutters. Looking at the photo you've posted, I suspect that a gap has formed between your gutter and the edge of the roof cover. Generally speaking, your galvanized roof for example overhangs the fascia which is connected to your rafters. Without the gutter the rain would come down in neat straight lines and puddle at the base of the house.

To prevent this, gutters are installed to divert the water down the storm pipes and into the sewer. The back lower end of the gutter is usually pressed against the fascia of the roof and the galvanized end of the roof overhangs this part as well. The water would technically fall into the gutter and not outside of it. But if for some reason the gutter has moved out of place or has shifted to create a gap then water could possibly fall between the fascia and the gutter.

I suggest investigating this issue and having a look if your gutter has indeed shifted and a gap has formed. If it has, then I suggest adjusting the gutter hooks that is holding the gutter in place and eliminating the gap.

However, if you are a bit hesitant to mess around with your gutter's placement and balance. I suggest engaging the services of a professional gutter installer and have them repair the fault.

I do like @EricL 's description, if you follow through the steps it will show up issues if they are there,

Gutters can shift over time, carrying all the water plus leaves and silt add a resonable weight to it. Worth while having a look at the fall of the gutter when you clean it out, plus making sure that the tiles/roofing over hang the gutter, somewhere between 1/3 in to a little less then half is a good rule of thumb.

Q: Has this always happened or just started to happen?

Q: Does this occur during heavy rain only or all rain?

This could happen from not enough fall of the guttering, not enough downpipes or a blockage in the down pipe. Its also could be as @EricL mentioned that the guttering clips have moved off the facia or some part of the guttering has moved off the clips. But you should visually be able to see either of these looking down the line of the gutter.

The overflow could be coming out of the overflow slots (Grey guttering photo) then the water is going back on itself towards the facia. But it's supposed to do that to prevent water entering the eves.

When safe to do so are you are able to send through a couple of extra photos including one like the attached. This will allow us to better evaluate.

Thanks everyone! It seems like the fall is the culprit. It’s been happening a bit, but I thought it might be because of too much rain. One end of the roof has some water puddling (I cleaned the gutters before spring), while the other end looks great. The clips also seem to be in good shape

and there aren’t any gaps. I’ve attached some photos for reference.

How can I fix the fall issue? Thanks again!

Hi @flummoxed01,

To fix the fall, you'll need to adjust the gutter hanger clips so that they gradually lower along the length of the guttering.

A typical minimum fall for gutters is 1:500, meaning the gutter should drop 1 cm for every 5 metres of length. Start by identifying the highest point of the gutter (usually near the opposite end of the downpipe) and then progressively lower each hanger clip towards the downpipe, ensuring the slope is consistent.

If the clips are in good shape, as you’ve mentioned, you should be able to adjust them without replacing them. Use a spirit level to check the slope as you work. Once the fall is corrected, water should flow more efficiently, and puddling should stop.

Your tiles look like they have been pushed a little too far up? I can push my bottom row of tiles up by about an inch and it looks very much like yours. Ive generally pushed them up whgen cleaning the gutter and notice they seem to far into the gutter itself. They should overhang the gutter edge by 1/3ish is what I usually think.

Did you push the tile up for the photos? Or is that how they were before you cleane dthe gutters?

It appears that some of the gutter clips have deteriorated and are no longer holding on properly. I suggest replacing them with a new set of clips, I suggest bringing one of the broken ones with you to the store to make sure you get the correct size. Please note that the galvanized brackets can be bent and adjusted to the level that you need it to be.

Yes, I did push up the tiles for photos.

I bought these from the store, but I’m not sure if they’re the right ones. I tried to figure out how to

install them but I couldn’t seem to get it right. Did I buy the wrong ones? If not, how do I install them?

I think they look like the right ones, The gutter needs to be removed first before installing them, I would use a pencil and draw the existing fall on the timber that your gutter is hanging off of.

The Gutter "folds" into/onto the clips, So if that one you have in your hand is mounted so the left hand side is flush on the Eve. Then when you go to clip the gutter in, tilt the gutter so its angled at 45degrees, then the high side of the gutter (with that groove on the edge) will fit into that circled end. Keep that circled end in the groove, Then you rotate the gutter down and the rear of the gutter should clip in to that edge with the hole in it (next to your finger and thumb).

As @Dave-1 has said, a gutter clip can't be retrofitted without taking the gutter off.

If you search "quad gutter install" on Youtube, you will find videos showing what Dave has described.
