How to tint a waterbased wood stain?

How to tint a waterbased wood stain?

Good afternoon. I have at least 3 Litres left of a water based Cabots Aqua Deck wood stain, left over over from staining my deck recently. I need to stain my high retaining wall next and am in the process of giving it a good clean, but I am looking for a darker see through colour. Is it possible to tint my merbau tinted stain with a small amount of black? Sorry about the poor photo of 'dirty' retaining wall, but you get the drift.

By the way, I read in one of the posts here  that you can add some Rit dye to the stain to get the effect. Is that possible?

Re: How to tint a waterbased wood stain

Hi @ChrisNoor,

It sounds like you might want a more opaque coating rather than a see-through one. Unfortunately, Cabot's Aquadeck cannot be tinted, so your only option would be to apply multiple coats to achieve a more opaque finish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Is it possible to add Rit dye powder to the stain then?

Re: How to tint a waterbased wood stain

Hello @ChrisNoor

I'm sorry but I'm afraid Rit dye powder is aimed more towards wardrobe and fabric materials. Unfortunately, there has been no testing done or documentation that dyes will work with the Aquadeck stain. If you were to mix the dye with the stain the results would be unpredictable, and any guarantees or warranties that come with the stain will be null and void. I don't recommend mixing the dye with the Aquadeck stain.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric

Thank you for that information, I appreciate your advise. However I mixed up a tiny bit just to see,

and applied it to my retaining wall. You can see the results in my photo.
