How to update pebblecrete pool surround?

Hi all!

i’m looking to do some work on the pool and surrounds. However, I have no idea on what can be done. The pool has pebblecrete inside and also for the coping. I would like to lay pavers around the pool including coping so that everything is level. The only difficulty is as seen in the photos the level around the pool is all different with the lowest side being around 22cms from the pool coping and highest side being around 3cm.

Do you think I can just lay pavers on higher side by pulling out the pavers whilst redoing the coping along the pool?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your pebblecrete pool surround.

I can see three possible directions you can take in regards to your proposed upgrade. First is to get a quote from a professional pool tiler in regards to removing and re-levelling your pool surround so that it is much lower. In this manner you'll be able to install pavers that can be at the same level as the pool surround. Second is to remove your brick paving and re-level the soil in that area so that when you install your new pavers it will be at the same height as your pebblecrete surround. The third option is to build a low-level deck that can go over the entire area and with its edge ending right next to the pool. This will save you from having to modify the bricks or pool edging.

Yes yo both questions. The pebblecrete will need to be removed from the coping so tiles can be laid to the concrete directly. Once all the old pavers are lifted, the base below can be regraded level and with falls to take the water away to grate drain or garden as required once new pavers are laid.

These projects would be best done as @EricL suggested by companies that specialise in pool restorations and landscapers.

Definently a few options you can go with, the trimber deck to over the pool coping may be the biggest look change up, removing the pebblecrete may be expensive but needed if you are going to tile up to the edge. The third option you mention of raising the soil level and redoing the paving is the one I am heading towards. Biggest return on dollar spent for a more modern overall look.

The costs plus labour -

- Raising the soil

- The outer edge along the fence will need to be properly retained,

- New style pavers, I have seen some nice larger sandstone styled pavers Tuscan Path 600 x 400 x 20mm Sandstone Paver

- Compaction of the new soil going in.

- Drainage adujustment and slope of runoff.

- Low voltage lighting run in under the pavers.

If you run the pavers up to be level with the existing coping and pressurewash that pebblecrete (make sure you dont lift the pebblecrete with the pressure washing) I think the edge would shine against the sandstone look. Cutting the pavers to match the curved edge of the coping may be the hardest part. I would practice cutting some first before starting the project if you are thinking of doing it yourself, just to determine if its a go or no.

Whichever path you decide, please take a bunch of photos as you go. It would be an interesting project to post up here I think 🙂

Thanks everyone! I think I’ve decided Ill pull out the pavers and relevel so that I can install new pavers. The only thing I am undecided is whether to install paver over the coping or just run to the edges of existing coping. My preference would be go right to the edge of the pool for that modern look. The only blocker would be costs…

It will look super modern with the pavers running to the edge of the pool. I propose doing more research on the possibility or speaking to a tile coping professional and asking them for a quote.

Quick update! Nearly done with the coping and pool surrounds. I’ve just concreted the area around the pool and laid the pavers over the existing pebblecrete. I went for drop edge thinking it will cover the pebblecrete. The drop edge is only just enough to cover the screeding. I’m trying to think of options on covering the pebblecrete without taking out and replacing all the waterline tiles.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what can be done?

Thank you very much for the update, the paving looks amazing. I propose getting the exact type of tile as your water edging and gluing it over the surface of the pebblecrete line that is under your paver. This is on the condition that there is enough space, and it does not sit proud of the pavers edge. Another option that comes to mind is to use specialized pool paint and to paint over the pebblecrete in a similar colour as the pavers.

You've really done an amazing job and thanks for sharing the updated photos.

I actually like the idea that @EricL had in painting if possible the exposed pebblecrete. Personally I would go with a solid colour within one of the blues of the tiles to create a band effect. A darker will may produce a nice shadow line look and be less noticeable that its a painted surface.

I also like the paining of the edge of the pebblecrete, in particular a dark blue as @Nailbag has suggested. I think it would merge with the eyes easier as you scan past.

Brilliant job with those tiles btw, im0pressive work on the corners 🙂
