Mailbox Reno - Slate tiles facade

Hi there!

A few years ago we built a brick mailbox and did a cement render then painted with outdoor paint and it's all still standing but it was not our best quality work and I'd love to cover it in Decor8 slate tiles for a more pleasing visual. I have used these tiles before however always on a porous surface.

My question is how best to prepare the smooth painted surface so that I can affix the slate tiles using mastic tile adhesive and then what sealant is best to weather proof once complete?

Picture of Mailbox now and before painting.

Hello @Srhcrss

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your mailbox.

In order to tile over the cement render, I suggest using a Craftright 75mm Crimped Cup Brush and a grinder. Please make sure to wear appropriate clothing, gloves, goggles and a mask when grinding the surface of the paint. Please keep in mind not to dig the grinder too deeply into the surface. Your goal is to remove the paint on the surface of the render. Once the surface is free of paint, I suggest washing the surfaced very well with water and detergent.

Let the surface totally dry off before you begin tiling the surface. Please make sure that the tiles you'll be using are rated for outdoor use. I recommend looking at the Davco 500ml Sanitized Tile And Grout Sealer to seal the tile and grout surface.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
