Nails in new merbau fence are weeping

Nails in new merbau fence are weeping

Well, it looks like we've made a mistake.

We used merbau batons to create a very long side fence and it looked fantastic for the first few months.

And now it looks like this.

We used these nails and thought they would be OK as they state they are for outdoor use: https://www.bunnings.com.au/powerfit-35mm-c-series-electro-galvanised-brad-nails-2000-pack_p6210720?...

If I sand it back and put wood filler in the holes, would this stop the weeping happening again?

I can't seem to find more appropriate nails for our nail gun at Bunnings. I need to create something similar at the front of our property but don't want to make the same mistake again

Any advice?

Re: Nails in new merbau fence are weeping

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @VanTovey

I'm so sorry to hear you've experienced this issue; I'm sure it is very disappointing.

I could only hazard a guess as to why this has occurred, but I suspect that the very thin electro-plating on the brad nails has been comprised, exposing their carbon steel inner body. I've spoken to the technical team at PowerFit, and they've requested you contact them directly with this image and details of the installation so they can investigate further. The team can be contacted at customerservice@ttibrands.com.au. Please attention your email to the technical team.

I've heard some good feedback on Rainex being used to remove these black rust marks on Merbau. It might be worth doing a test section on an inconspicuous section first before committing to the whole fence.

I don't believe adding putty over the nail head will prevent this issue from reoccurring. If you did so and then oiled the timber, it might prolong the time until it happens again.

Let me mention one of our experienced members @DIY4Knuckleheds to see if they have any thoughts.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for coming back to me.

Will reach out to Powerfit.

Is there another type/brand of nail I can use in our nail gun for attaching merbau batons which you could recommend?

We have some other work we need to do.

Re: Nails in new merbau fence are weeping

Hello @VanTovey

My friend MitchellMc is currently taking a well-deserved break. I've looked online at the store and I'm afraid Powerfit is the only one that actually says for indoor/outdoor use. The other brands such as Paslode is a slightly bigger nail but am not sure if it is compatible with your nail gun. The other one is the Arrow it is only rated for finishing work.

Allow me to speak to my tool specialist so that I can get more information.

Thank you for your patience.

Eric

Re: Nails in new merbau fence are weeping

Hi @VanTovey

Thank you for your patience. I've asked my tool specialist and other team members who are knowledgeable about this and I'm afraid there are no other nails in the C-series that will be applicable for outside use. My trade specialist suggested replacing the nails with Galvanized fencing coil nails.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
