Outdoor pavers paint process

Outdoor pavers paint process

Hi there,

I have an outdoor patio with very old concrete pavers (placed on paver sand). I’m planning to refresh the look by applying a concrete stain or paint.

The pavers are currently unsealed, I understand the process will involve cleaning, prinming and paint

Before I start, I’d like advice on the correct steps and suitable products to do this properly and ensure durability.

Specifically, I’m looking for guidance on:

  • Recommended cleaning methods and products for old, unsealed pavers

  • Whether a primer is mandatory and which type works best

  • which type of paint to choose from(I dont want glossy look that Berger Jet provides)

  • Any product recommendations that have worked well in similar situations

The total area is approximately 75 square metres.

Re: Outdoor pavers paint process

Hello @bh039

I recommend using 30 Seconds 5L Outdoor Cleaner Concentrate in combination with Oates Deck Scrub Brush With Squeegee or similar. If you have access to a power washer, I suggest using it to rinse the surface of the pavers. If your power washer has a patio washer attachment, I highly recommend using it so that you get a uniform cleaned surface. Make sure that the paver is totally dry before you begin painting the surface.

In regards to the primers and paint, I suggest looking at the White Knight Ultra Pave 4L Medium Grey Quick Dry Paving and Concrete Paint. This is a satin finish, but I suggest visiting your local store so that you can see the sample board and decide if the finish is to your liking. For maximum adhesion you can use the White Knight Ultra Pave 2L Garage Floor Primer

The other brand I suggest looking at is the Dulux 10L Concrete & Paving Coloured Sealer Satin Medium Tint and the Dulux 10L White Tint Matt Concrete And Paving Coloured Sealer. The primer for this is the Dulux 4L Concrete and Paving Bare Concrete Primer. In case you are curious, stage one is Dulux 1L Concrete And Paving Sealed Surface Cleaner, but I only advise using it if the surface is sealed.

As to which one is best, I can only point you towards the customer review section and you can see what the ratings and reviews are for the product.

I also suggest having a look at this discussion - Paver refresh with paint by @prettyliving.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves and goggles when working on your project.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
