Produce friendly backyard

We never necessarily had an end result in mind for the backyard. When we moved in to the house for the first time, the front yard fence line had multiple trees tangled into each other, we cut them down and made a mulch pile in the back yard (giant dirt patch pictured). The mulch pile killed the grass so instead of growing grass again we dug a small trench and put sleepers there to section off the area. I put weed mats over the whole area to stop not only weeds but also birds getting worms.

we put 6 fruit trees in lemon, orange, lime, peach, mashing pear, apricot and then I did loads of bark all over with tiles that came with the house.

We made two raised garden boxes later then gravel leading up to that.

I painted the fence black to tie everything in.

I made a dog house when we moved in but the dog never took a liking to it so I took the roof off of it and repurposed it into a small raised garden for herbs.

the area is really tranquil and everything is so easily accessible off the back door!

Materials

Dark nugget bark

Railway sleepers

2 x 50m weed mats

Decking timber (top of raised gardens)

Pave tight paving sand (around raised gardens

Washed 14mm pebble stones

Small pavers - leading up to herb box

Tools

Fence - Number 8 paint gun from Bunnings (highly recommend - amazing and affordable)

Spade and rake - goes a long way

Re: Produce friendly backyard

Hi @EuroKiwi,

Congratulations on creating such a beautiful and purposeful backyard space!

It’s clear you’ve put a lot of thought, creativity, and hard work into transforming a once tangled and bare area into a tranquil, productive retreat.

Repurposing the dog house into a herb garden and painting the fence black to unify the space shows great resourcefulness and an eye for detail.

It’s inspiring to see how you’ve turned a challenging patch into a peaceful backyard haven.

Thank you for sharing.

Jacob
