What caravan shelter?

Hiya. I’m looking for a shelter for my caravan whilst on the road…whilst parked at a camp site…as a bit of shelter from the rain as I’ve sprung a leak…and I would like to protect her and my stuffs…

Im travelling solo, so looking for something that’s relatively straight forward to set up (and pack down)…

All helpful insights and suggestions welcome!

I'm not sure how easy this would be to set up solo and I have a feeling it would be quite bulky. Do you know where your leak is? Might be easier to strap a tarp over the van until the weather is better, then fix the leak. Do you know when the caravan was last done completely? ie hatch, windows and trims/j rails all taken off and new sealant applied? Looking at your profile pic, your Viscount is around 50yrs old, many still have the original sealant that has failed.

I have a 1973 Viscount that I took everything off to properly reseal as she leaked like a sieve. I used Sikaflex Pro on the trims and hatch and mastic tape (from a caravan shop) on the windows. There are a few different schools of thought on best sealant, I like sikaflex because it's paintable unlike silicone.

I agree with @twocutekelpies that the type of shelter you’re looking at would be quite large and tricky to manage on your own. You’d probably need at least one, if not two, extra sets of hands to get it up safely, so it might only be practical if you were staying in one spot for an extended time.

For short stays, as mentioned, the simplest option is usually a tarp stretched over the van. Even a smaller tarp that just covers the immediate roof area can help stop water from running into the leak. It’s quick to set up and pack down, and much easier to handle solo than a full shelter.

Long-term, fixing the leak will save you a lot of stress. If you can share some photos of the likely leak spots, we’d be glad to help walk you through sealing options and products that work well on vans like yours.

@MitchellMc @twocutekelpies Thanks for replies. I indeed/am fixing the leaks, I was only asking about the shelter to give my van a break from the weather and dry out enough for me to do so. I have a small and large tarp so I’ll stick with them. Saved me some $$…this time! Thanks again 🌸
