What drainage options for outdoor kitchen sink?

Hi all,

I have just set up an outdoor BBQ kitchen that includes a sink and tap. I have a water hose connection nearby to supply water, but there is no drainage close to the area.

The sink will only be used occasionally, mainly for washing hands or rinsing things like fish. I was wondering what the best option for drainage might be in this situation.

There is a stormwater pipe nearby, but I believe connecting into that would not be allowed. Would something like a portable wastewater canister be a practical solution? Or are there other ideas people here have used for a similar setup?

Appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Re: Outdoor BBQ Kitchen Sink – Drainage Options?

Hi @mkh1991,

Thank you for your question about drainage for your outdoor BBQ.

Unfortunately, you are correct that you couldn't connect it to a stormwater pipe, as wastewater needs to be plumbed to the council wastewater system, which is separate from the council stormwater system.

Your best long-term solution would be to have a plumber connect it to the wastewater system; however, this might not be practical if there isn't a pipe near your outdoor kitchen. It may still be worth exploring as an option. If you had or could get a copy of your home's drainage plans, there might be a pipe beneath the surface that is closer than you think.

Considering it would be used relatively infrequently, I'd probably just drain it into a 20L Bucket, then pour it down a sink that is already connected to the wastewater system. It's not a perfect solution, but it would be cheap and relatively easy considering the occasional nature of its use.

Allow me to tag @Dave-1, @AlanM52 and @Noyade to see if they have any ideas or suggestions.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Outdoor BBQ Kitchen Sink – Drainage Options?

Good Afternoon @mkh1991

I would go for draining to a bucket for a short term solution. Tho the first time the bucket gets forgotten about to empty the "want" to have it plumbed properly will go through the roof  I have seen this sport of setup and it does work, just have to make sure its emptied after use.

The drain cannot be connected to the stormwater for the reasons @JacobZ has outlined, Very soon you would have the council on your door with smelly water in the gutter  :surprised:

Re: What drainage options for outdoor kitchen sink?

Hi @mkh1991,

Can you post some photos of the BBQ area because I am thinking of a garden bed or maybe even unconnected drainage pit.

For what you are doing and the amount of water I myself would not consider paying for the wastewater connection.

Cheers
