Hi,
I’m currently exploring the idea of building my own outdoor seating with planter boxes being incorporated into the backrest.
I've knocked up a design on sketchup but am not sure how to approach the inside of the planter boxes.
Ideally I want to avoid filling the entire planter section with soil, what could I use as a base so the planter is only 300mm deep?
Hoping that any suggested material will also work to stop soil from filling the entire backrest and spilling out the rear as the seat is going to be against a fence so will have an open back aside from the planter section.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Mitch
Hello @mitchp22
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your planter box with seating.
To save you from having to design too much into your seating, I suggest using a Holman 770 x 370 x 325mm Dune Large Self-Watering Modern Planter integrated into the design at the back of the seat hidden from view. In this manner you won't have to worry about covers, liners and overfilling the area with soil.
The planter will take care of all of the responsibility of holding the soil and plant in place, plus, the planter can be taken out if you need to maintain or repot the plants into fresh soil. There are a number of planter troughs available, I suggest visiting your local store so that you can see which one will suit your design. The only thing you'll need to add to your design is for something for the planter to sit on inside the back rest.
