What plants suit a cat sanctuary?

Hi Guys,

I live in Canberra (North side) and we have just built a cat sanctuary, I am looking to put some plants and flowers.

I was hoping to get some ideas and safe plants for my cats.

Thank you in advance

Nicole

Re: cat sanctuary plants

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @nicolebarnes381. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about cat-friendly plants.

When choosing plants, it’s important to pick varieties that are non-toxic to cats, especially if they like to nibble or play among them. Since you're on the north side of Canberra, you'll also want plants that can handle frosts and seasonal temperature changes. Luckily, there are some beautiful flowering options that are both cat-safe and well-suited to your climate. Calendula is a great choice, producing cheerful orange and yellow flowers that brighten up any space and cope well with cooler weather. Camellias are another safe pick, offering lush green foliage and elegant blooms in winter and early spring. For vibrant colour during the warmer months, snapdragons are a hardy, non-toxic option that come in a wide range of hues.

If you're after something taller, sunflowers are completely safe for cats and add height and drama to the garden. For ground cover, violets are a lovely and delicate choice, with their soft purple, white, or yellow flowers.

As a special treat, you could include catmint, which has soft purple flowers and tends to attract cats without being overpowering like catnip. Lemon balm is also safe for cats and has a fresh, calming scent, plus it's quite hardy. You might also consider planting herbs like basil or thyme, which are generally safe and can thrive in a sunny, well-drained spot.

Be sure to avoid common but toxic plants like chrysanthemums, azaleas, anything in the lily family, sago palms, and aloe vera, which can be toxic to cats.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
