Re: What type of paint for painting over bricks

Hello @Wy

Are you by chance referring to brick pavers that you walk on? In order to give our members a better idea of what is happening would it be possible for you to post a photo of the bricks you are referring to? Once our members see its condition, we'll be able to offer recommendations on how to proceed.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Yes. Weeds appear between the bricks.

Re: What type of paint for painting over bricks

Hi @Wy,

Assuming it is a brick-paved patio, with gaps between the bricks, you would need to apply some kind of filler between the bricks to prevent the weeds from growing through. Mortar is what they typically use between brick pavers in a situation like this.

Once that mortar is in place, you can use the Dulux Concrete And Paving Sealed Surface Cleaner to prepare, the Dulux Concrete And Paving Sealed Surface Primer to prime and the Dulux 10L Concrete & Paving Coloured Sealer in a colour and finish of your choosing to paint and finish.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

@Wy,

Might I suggest you share a few photos of your paving so the community can see what you are working with and be in a better position to share advice on next steps.

Thanks,

Jason

I thought that simply painting over the gaps would suffice. Also, there is Pav Loc. Does Pav Loc have a mortar base?

Re: What type of paint for painting over bricks

Hi @Wy,

How wide are the gaps between your pavers?

Pav Loc is a polymeric sand product, which is similar but not really the same as mortar. A flexible polymer bonds the sand together, which allows some slight movement between the pavers. On the other hand, the bonding agent in mortar is cement, which is not flexible like polymeric sand.

It really depends on the size of the gaps whether you can work with it or not. If you were talking 1-2mm, you would probably be fine, but if your gaps were 3mm or above, then I can't see the paint lasting very long without splitting. The issue is the movement of the pavers. Paint is somewhat flexible, but it isn't designed for constant flexion. If the pavers sit on a solid base with no movement and the gaps between are minor, you might get away with just painting it, but if you had wider gaps, mortar would be the way to go. It is more rigid than pavelock, meaning it would be a better base for the paint as it will not move.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Re: What type of paint for painting over bricks

Hello @Wy

Thank you for sharing that picture of your pavers. If you are after stopping the weeds from growing between your pavers by painting it, that strategy will not work. Weeds are resilient and grow almost anywhere especially in the gaps between pavers. I propose controlling the weeds with Yates 1L Path Weeder Concentrate in combination with Yates 1L Path Weeder Concentrate, please note that the path weeder is a concentrate and must be diluted before use.

If you still wish to seal your pavers, I propose looking at the Crommelin 1L Natural Finish Penetrating Sealer and Water Repellent. It is a premium clear surface treatment formulated to provide a deep penetrating water repellent barrier, without changing the look or feel of masonry, concrete, natural stone, paving or timber surfaces. Just keep in mind that this will not stop the weeds from growing between your pavers.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when spraying the weed killer.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
