How to fix gap between retaining blocks and concrete slab?

Hello,

Im after some advice. I have put in a small retaining wall to act as a step down off a concrete slab to get a better slope for turf.

I used Versalock blocks, Originally I planned for a small gap but as the slab was already down, I was governed by Versalock block sizes which meant the gaps on both sides are different. One gap is 120mm the other is 70mm. My question is what should I fill this gap with Concrete or Mortar? To me it feels like a case of too small for concrete but too big for mortar which could crack. Im leaning towards Concrete. But again I would be thinking Expansion join foam one Versalock block side , possibly the other? Thoughts?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your concrete slab gap.

I'm in agreement with your idea of using concrete as it needs to be strong when stepped on. In order to protect the surface finish of the blocks, I suggest covering it with masking tape and builder's plastic before you put the wet concrete on. I also suggest digging the gap deeper to at least 75mm. This will make the filling strong and make sit safe to step on. Installing expansion foam would be ideal just in case there is any movement between them.

I would dig that trench just a little deeper and use a 10-15mm river pebble to fill that gap which. They are available in a range of colours and would make a nice feature transition between the two surfaces. Plus you wouldn't have any expansion issues to deal with.

I like the idea of the pebbles and a deeper trench to sit them in. @Nailbag's idea would work well.
