Boxes from offcuts and salvaged timber

Jack has been enjoying making timber boxes from scrap wood. We've been experimenting with a variety of fixings and timber joins. This was the trickiest box so far.

Materials

Timber Architrave

Plywood

8mm Dowel

Nails

Wood glue

3mm and 8mm drill bits

Paint

Tools

Hammer

Hand saw

Drill

Paint tray

Paint brush

Paint roller

Steps

Step 1

We asked the handyman if he could cut some of the leftover architrave to make a box.

Step 2

  • 2 mm holes for nails
  • 3mm holes for screws
  • 8mm for countersink for dowel

Step 3

Jack traced around the shape of box onto plywood, for the base. He marked where the holes should be drilled for the screws, dowel and nails.

Step 4

Once the materials were prepared Jack laid all the materials out in position with the tools, ready to start.

Step 5

Jack put a few screws in to hold the sides together. He squeezed wood glue into the holes and put 8mm dowel into them and banged them with a hammer. This was to cover up the screws and create a nice smooth finish.

Jack chose a salmon pink to paint the new box.

Re: Boxes from offcuts and salvaged timber

Nice work @JacksProjects!

They look nice and solid, and I love the colour.

I hope you had a great time making them, Jack.

Keep up the good work!

Jacob
