Cheap ideas wanted for wall texture

Hello Bunnings community,

This question is for the whole house but also would be great to specifically mention if it is not suitable for a bathroom. I am seeking for some texture ideas for the wall especially interesting ones.

For example, I haven't tried but apparently if you put tile glue on the wall and press on it with a piece of wood or even just brush it, you can get great results and look will be similar to concrete.

I also saw a plaster bird glued on the wall and whole wall rendered including the bird. - hope this makes sense 🙂

Any not too expensive and creative ideas ?

Some of the classic techniques to give your wall a textured look involves ordinary paint and wrapping a soft cotton rope around your roller brush in different directions. When applied to the wall, it gives you a very unique pattern. Next is a combination of a regular roller and a Spear & Jackson Masonry Brush. The masonry brush will give you deep channels in the paint creating a very textured look.

Then there is the Dulux Paint Effects, these paints come in a special formulation that lets you apply a variety of effects including a concrete look.

Hi @Cocoplum,

That's a tough one. I haven't seen many quality internal wall textures that I like for a long time. Wallpaper is currently the best way to achieve some texture to the room, but it is very expensive and Bunnings don't have many to select from.

Porters Paints have some nice interesting paint textures options so I would check them out.

Thank you for your reply @redbournreno. Love wallpaper but not in my budget. I think I will render. All other options looked cheap.

Years ago I used a sponge with paint and dabbed it over the wall (started with a white base colour). It made it look like a sandstone/terracotta wall with the colour and texture. It looked great and had a non smooth texture overall without being too rough. That said it was afair amount of dabbing gently and doing edges and up near the cornice was time consumimg (ended up using a small art paintbrush and dabbing to replicate a sponge look.) Just went looking for an old pic but I dont have any 😕

I have also done teh whole paint and then brush with a course brush, That came up nicely tho do not know what it would be like to repaint down the track. That is always my concern for when I feel like a change, how hard will it be to get it back to something smooth.

Not sure if these ides are along the lines of what you want but they certainly provided a texture look.

Yes good call @Cocoplum . I haven't seen anything nice that isn't a very expensive specialist finish.

Hi, I'm very much a novice with all of this but like urself, I've also been looking into diff ways to achieve certain effects on a budget. I've almost completed a feature wall in the living room, in which I was trying to give it a weathered concrete effect, also with a textured finish. One of the best ways that I found to achieve this look/style, that is very very cheap & easy & also easily reversible if u don't like it, is to simply add something directly into the paint. I've prev done this with sand but after reading about diff options, I actually went with Kitty Litter, which I realize may sound a bit bizarre but it really worx & I think looks great. I used a specific type of litter, that basically looks like little sandstone type of rocks, then I crushed it up, mixed it in with the paint & applied, not to the entire wall, juzt here & there to give it a more natural look. You could also use sand or even actual gravel, depending on desired colour & texture & as mentioned, it's really cheap & if you're not happy with it, then just sand it back & go with something diff but if you try it before on a spare piece of material, you'll be able to see how it comes up. Hi, because I'm using grey tones & only using the effect here & there, it'z a bit hard to notice unless ur near to it, so I took a couple of close up photos to try & give u an idea of the texture/effect. I also mixed it in with part of the paint because the color of the litter etc wasn't important, juzt the effect. If u were wanting it to stand out even more so, then probably apply litter/sand/gravel basically on top of paint, so that it retains it's color. Thank you, appreciate it, it took a few coats & bit of experimenting but was happy with the way it turned out, esp as I'm not a real handy type of person but I really enjoy having a go at diff thingz & it'z great to have an online community, such as this to be able to discuss diff projects with & get tips & advice. 😃

Thank you so much for sharing that excellent method of adding sand and gravel to produce that concrete textured effect. If you can consistently add the right amount of sand and gravel, you should be able to create a nice textured surface.

Thank u Eric & you're spot on, u juzt add the amount required to get the level of effect you're wanting & over whatever area you choose & apart from the fact that there are many diff products u can use, such as sand, gravel & litter, they each give a slightly diff effect & best of all, they're all easy to find & extremely cheap.
