DETA and IPV6

I have a few DETA Connectgrid plug ends installed on some electrical towels rails. They have worked fine up until I change internet provider to Telstra. After wasting several hours trying to re-connect using the online help I rang them and was told that Connectgrid doesn't support IPV6 and they have no plans to do so.

Unfortunately the rest of the world has moved or is moving to IPV6 which means that the whole DETA range is pretty much useless.

Do you have any suggestions? Returning these would require me to get an electrician back to uninstall them...

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Glockers. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you've experienced with your Grid Connect device.

Most routers that operate on IPV6 also operate with IPV4 due to the many products that are still produced today using IPV4. By default, it sounds like your router is configured for IPV6 and can't see the IPV4 devices.

Have you spoken with Telstra about this? You'll likely need to manually add the device's MAC/IP addresses and identify them as IPV4 in your router's settings so it knows which protocol to use for them. Here are the directions for setting up an IPV4 device on a Telstra modem.

I'm just waiting to hear back from the Grid Connect team to find out if you can identify the IP address of the plug adaptors. Also just to confirm, you've tried the suggestions and made the adjustments for connecting to a Telstra Smart modem in the Grid Connect troubleshooting section?

I tried all the suggestions I saw but then I rang Gridconnect helpline and they got me to do an IPV6 test and when it was confirmed they said it won't work no matter what we try. They said I could return it to Bunnings which isn't possible as an electrician has already installed them. They also said I could contact Telstra and get them to change my router out for an IPV4. Neither suggestion is useful.

I can set up an IPV4 channel in principle but without "Protocol, Destination port and Destination IP address for the forward" I cannot complete the steps.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble connecting your DETA plugs. I suggest trying this method to link up your DETA gear, have a look if your old modem can be converted into an access point or wifi extender. If it has that function you can directly plug it into your new modem. Your old modem has the old stacked system where IPV4 and IPV6 work in tandem. Link the DETA gear to the old modem and your old modem will do the rest and communicate to the new modem via the ethernet cable.

There are dozens of tutorials online on how to convert old modems to wifi extenders. Just make sure to indicate the make and model of your modem when you look for the conversion process online. Please make sure to place your old modem as far away as possible from the new modem so that their signals don't interfere with one another.

Thanks for the suggestion but having a “smart home” where I need lots of different boxes cluttering up the space is counterintuitive. Maybe Gridconnect can join the 21st century. BTW, I looked at their Developers Forum and there is a post from 2009 stating that IPV6 was the standard to work to going forward. If you do the maths that is 13 years…

The other option If no joy download Tuya Smart or Smart Life app both are Tuya products which is the parent of Grid Connect App, and I believe they accept the IPv6 protocol, you will need to reflash your devices into the app.

Worth a try anyways.

Tried the 2.4 option but no go. Gridconnect support confirmed this wouldnt work. Will try the Tuya option - thanks. By reflash I assume you mean reset to factory settings and add to Tuya app?

@Glockers you don't need to reset it just exit out of Grid Connect then open up Tuya and then click on the plus symbol to add a product and follow the instructions, all the information will come across into Tuya.

How'd you go contacting Telstra about allowing IPV4 devices to connect to your router, @Glockers? Telstra has several guides on how to do this on their various models of routers. All of their routers have had this ability, but perhaps this is the first model that won't recognise IPV4 devices. I believe it does come from the factory with the default setting of IPV6. Have you confirmed with Telstra that there isn't a setting for IPV4V6? The Grid-Connect tech assist I spoke to has a Telstra Smart Modem, and his Grid-Connect devices connect to it. Perhaps it's a previous model that supported IPV4, though.

Does Tuya need to be on a 2.4 network? And what device should I choos. I have the DETA 3pin plugs and there doesn't appear to be an equivalent listed unless its "Plug (BLE and Wifi)?.

Hi all, Tried Tuya and have sent following to them for further help.

“Hi Ian, Got your number off the Tuya forum. I have a couple of DETA plug ends which no longer work as my new internet supplier (Telstra) has provided an IPV6 router. I have set up a 2.4 network and also tried AP but no help. GridConnect support have said that IPV6 is not supported and have no plans to do so. Bunnings forum suggested trying Tuya and I have done so and get a little bit further in the process but still no joy. If I hold down the reset button until it gets to slow blinking the app says to find the SmartLife hotspot. The only one I can see is an Arlec one. I join this and it seems to connect but the phone goes to 4g mode and nothing happens. Previously in GC it would reject the Arlec link after 20 seconds and say network unavailable. Thanks Mark

Unfortunately I had an electrician install the plugs on my towel rails so any change will require an electrician again to de-install and then re-install something that works. Assuming you have something that does work with IPV6.

Got nowhere. I did work out how to set up my guest network as IPV4 (and 2.4) but it is still not connecting beyond "seeing" the plug, asking to join my network, and then get to choose the Arlec network - it just sits there doing nothing but with a choice to "Reconnect". All very strange and painful.

I installed one of these over the weekend and like some Grid /Tuya devices they have a hard time picking up connecting on EZ mode so to enter AP mode you first enter EZ mode by pressing in the reset button with the supplied tool or a tooth pick for 5 sec until you see the blue light flashing rapidly and you also hear the clicking, you then press the reset button for another 5 seconds and then the light will go to a slow flash and slow click.

Now when you hit the + button on the top right hand corner you will see EZ click that and change to AP, it will ask you to connect to the Gridxxx network and that's fine the device has an eprom Grid Connect flashed software that's why Gridxxx, if your 5ghz is on it will tell you to turn it off.

It will then ask if you want to connect to this device all the time just click this time only and then exit out a few times until back to the Grid or Tuya App then it will go through to find the device and activate it and then load back onto your normal Wifi.

Don't forget to turn back on 5ghz if you turned it off to connect if running dual.

@Glockers I also checked if a smart plug might be an option to be an interface between your socket outlet and your towel heater but no good it seems they all run on the 2.4ghz, ipv4 protocol unless you can find one that runs bluetooth or Zigbee

I bought some of the Tapo smart plugs and they work on the 2.4/ipv4 network I have setup but no joy with GC/Deta plug ends. so it seems like it’s something else. Will try Tuya with new setup before binning them…

I’ve tried AP and it gets one step further as it moves to the “choose Arlec hotspot” but after it thinks for a while it says Internet unavailable”. When it does this the blue light stops flashing. So something is going on at plug level.
