What are the main differences between these products & when is one better to use e.g. on internal /external doors, letter boxes, washing lines, cupboard hinges. etc.)?
Hi @Else,
Thank you for your question.
WD-40, lanolin spray, and silicone spray each serve different purposes depending on the application.
Standard WD-40 is a water-displacing spray that penetrates rust and frees seized parts. It’s best for short-term fixes on metal. Things like rusty hinges, letterboxes, or outdoor locks. However, it isn’t a long-lasting lubricant and can attract dust over time. Avoid using it on rubber or plastic as it may degrade them.
Lanolin spray, such as this Boston Heavy Duty Lanolin Spray offers long-term lubrication and corrosion protection. It’s natural, non-toxic, and safe for metal, plastic, and rubber. Ideal for outdoor use on things like gates, letterboxes, and washing lines. It leaves a protective coating that resists weather. It can be a bit sticky, so it’s less suitable for clean indoor surfaces.
Silicone spray, such as this CRC 808 Silicone is a dry, slick lubricant perfect for internal applications. It reduces friction without attracting dust, making it ideal for cupboard hinges, drawers, sliding doors, and rubber seals. It’s safe on plastic and rubber, but not useful for rusted or stuck parts.
In short: use WD-40 to unstick, lanolin to protect, and silicone to quietly lubricate.

Thanks Jacob, that was very helpful...
What about an internal fire door that's just a bit squeaky? Is silicone best for that?
Hello @Else
I suggest going with CRC 808 Silicone as it is a dry, slick lubricant perfect for internal applications. It reduces friction without attracting dust, making it ideal for cupboard hinges, drawers, sliding doors, and rubber seals.
