Grid Connect Garage Door, Front PIR Sensor, Downlight example

Hi All,

I thought I would share an example of how I am using 3 of the grid connect products for ease of access and also security at the front of my house.

Second I am a qualified electrician of 20 years and some of these products are hard-wired and must be installed by a electrical contractor (Licensed Electrical Business)

First off the Orion garage door opener is installed on my panel lift utilising the OSC terminals of the existing garage door motor. I used a length of Deta cable duct to encase the cable along the ceiling you can use double sided tape but I also like to use some dabs of no more gaps every 300mm.

Second I installed 7 x Luce Bella 92mm LED downlights into the eves of the front of the house ( I relocated 6 as I installed 6 Arlec grid connect 92mm at the back)

I connected these in parallel to the switch to the Deta grid connect PIR sensor and have set the lux to daytime so that it picks up movement during the day and night. Why? I have a automation  that sends me a message when the sensor turns ON that someone is out the front.

With the PIR in parallel it means I can use the switch without disruption to the sensor.

Thirdly if thats a word I wired a Batten holder next to the power point in the garage where the motor and orion control plugs into and have a BC grid connect globe connected here. This comes on for 5 min along with the outside lights when the garage door changes stays to Open and after 5 min turns off. Because the garage lights get used so much there is no guarantee they would be on at the switch and as I work split shift at The Big Green Shed I want good light when I come home.

So in a nut shell the following happens

Drive home.

Around the corner hit Google on car stereo. Response is Can I Have Your Pin

Respond with pin, response garage door open

Alert. Garage door Open, Someone is out the front

7 downlights are on

1 x Grid connect light is on

Drive in

Press Google on stero say close Garage door, garage door closes

Lights outside and inside stay on for 5 min then turn off.

Other automation

Someone walks out the front day or night.

7 x downlights come on

Alert comes through Someone is out the front.

Lights time out at 5 min.

I also get a notification from my Swan cameras and can view the stored recording.

I hope that gives some insight and help to someone. I really love grid connect gear for its simplicity some times it goes haywire and you do have to reconnect via reflashing it but other than that it's not to bad.

This is wonderful, @CSParnell. Thank you for sharing how you are using Grid Connect gear in your home. I love the step-by-step detail you've included in installing these, along with explaining the logic behind them. The process can undoubtedly get tricky sometimes, so I'm sure many of our members will find these details helpful when attempting to use these products to secure their own homes - especially since they're authored by an electrical specialist like yourself.

Thank you once again, and excited to read about any other home projects you may be working on as well.

Cheers,

Akanksha (AK)

Re: Grid Connect Garage Door, Front PIR Sensor, Downlight example

@CSParnell thanks for sharing. Just wondering, how fast do you find the PIR sensor responds to movement?

I have the Grid Connect doorbell camera and light switches wired to my outdoor light and I have set it up to switch on for two minutes when the PIR sensor on the camera detects movement. However it can take up to 20 seconds after detecting movement for the light to switch on which is a bit frustrating if trying to find the right key in the dark. I might have to get the independent PIR sensor if that works better.

It's instant mate no delay at all.

It's comparable to any other non smart PIR that I have installed in the past.

Hello @CSParnell

Thank you so much for sharing that very detailed Grid automation setup. I'm sure a lot of our members will find this very useful if they decide to set up their own automated system in their homes. I've got some Orion Grid security cameras that were so easy to set up and they all send me alerts on that single app. I'll be sure to bookmark this discussion for future reference.

You can utilise Geo Fencing to activate the garage door open function as well and close for that matter but I prefer voice command.
