How to add a door to a dog kennel?

Hi everyone,

looking for some advice on how to add a door to a dog kennel to be kept indoors and what equipment may be needed to help reduce sound from the dog kennel also.

I have recently purchased an indoor dog kennel for two (loud) chihuahuas. However, the dog kennel does not have a lockable door. I have included a picture of the kennel and its dimensions. What could I use to create a safe, lockable door?

Additionally, it would be great if any products could be recommended to dampen sound for dogs barking not to affect neighbours while in the kennel. I understand full soundproofing is not possible.

I would put thick carpet inside and outside the kennel to help stop the noise.

I wouldnt lock them in the kennel consider putting them into a laundry space with water and food,

I understand your concern about creating a comfortable and safe space for your dogs, but I'd also recommend thinking carefully about locking them in the kennel. Often, when dogs bark excessively, the root cause is anxiety or boredom, especially when owners are away. Locking them in could potentially worsen these behaviours.

Instead, you might consider providing them with a closed room that has an abundance of toys to keep them entertained. Puzzle toys that you can hide treats in are a great way to challenge them mentally and keep them busy. This could also help to reduce barking, as they’ll have something positive to focus on.

If you still want to add a door to the kennel, it would have to be a mesh door to allow for airflow and ventilation, which is crucial. A solid door would trap heat and restrict airflow. However, keep in mind that a mesh door won’t help with soundproofing. Typically, if a dog is to be housed in a restricted area, it would be a wire mesh enclosure and not a kennel.
