How to attach a timber flyscreen frame to old sash windows?

I’ve recently cleaned up and painted the windows of an old stone cottage. It has some fly screen panels that I need to replace the fly wire in. The fly screens were screwed on to the opening section of sash windows but I’d like a less permanent way of fixing them so they can be easily removed for cleaning the window behind it. The fly screens obviously need to sit hard up against the window and I don’t want to mortise the windows (but happy to mortise the fly screen. What fixture would be best to use?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Greenwood. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about fixing flyscreen frames.

It’s a bit tricky to recommend a specific fixing without knowing exactly how the flyscreen frames sit on your windows. Do they sit proud of the window frame, or recessed within it? If the frames sit within the window opening, you could likely use standard flyscreen clips, like those from RollTrack, which hold the screen securely while still allowing easy removal for cleaning. If it sits proud of the frame, you would need a different solution, but it’s difficult to specify without seeing exactly how they sit. Even using four small screws to hold the frames in place can be a simple solution if you only need to remove them occasionally, as they are easy to undo and replace. If you can provide a sketch showing how the frame sits within the window frame, that would help suggest the best way to fix them so they are secure yet removable.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Mitchell. They sit proud but I realise as aim looking at it that this means there’s an opening at the top of them because the meeting rail of the top panel is recessed in from outside lining. So I’m thinking to maybe I’ll have to get the router out so the top doesn’t have to be padded out with anything. That would also allow me to use the fly screen clips. They were screwed in previously but the fly screen timber isn’t in amazing nick so repeated unscrewing will probably end up crumbling the timber.
