I've mocked up plans to build this bench seat as a summer project. My aim was to maximise storage, accessible with a large lid (18mm plywood) that opens from the top. The frame will be 90mm x 35mm untreated framing timber. Inside the frame will be plywood sheets and external will be lining board (something like this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/easycraft-2400-x-1200-x-9mm-easyvj100-wall-lining-primed-general-purpose...).
I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions on the project (I'm very much a beginner DIYer).
1. In the frame, what's the best way to join the vertical supports that sit between the long horizontal ones? Long 120mm screws straight through the horizonal piece into the end grain of the support? Or pocket screws, and if so, where should they be placed?
2. What hinge should I use for the 18mm plywood lid? I'm thinking 6 of these (https://www.bunnings.com.au/hafele-94-easy-mount-hinge-with-and-without-spring-2-pack_p0676426) plus some sort of lid stay support.

Hi @adam21,
Your project sounds great, and your plan is heading in the right direction. For joining the vertical supports, the simplest method is to screw straight through the long horizontal pieces into the ends of the verticals. Since your frame timber is 90 mm wide, I’d countersink the screws slightly so you get a bit more bite, around 10 mm extra, without splitting the timber. Pocket screws are also an option if you prefer; they’re typically angled into the end of the verticals from the inside face of the horizontal member, and can give a cleaner look, but for your frame, straight butt joints with screws will work perfectly.
For the lid, the hinges you’ve selected are suitable, and it's a great idea to add a lid stay or support to hold it open safely when accessing the storage. You might like to consider gas struts for this.
Overall, your plan looks solid and well thought out. You’re on the right track, and I’m sure it will come together nicely.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
