How to fill cracks on mortar or bricks?

Dear Members,

As a newbie in these topics, I need your advice on how best to fill or fix a few random cracks or gaps showing up on the mortar between two bricks on the outside wall. In some cases the cracks showing up on the brick itself.

I was checking up online, but i am not clear on say should I use mortar mix or render or a gap filler from Shelly or something else. The bricks are not loose or the mortar is not crumbling to the touch.

Many thanks.

Re: How do i go around filling cracks on mortar or bricks?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, @PBOR. It’s sensational to have you join us and many thanks for your question about repairing cracks in mortar and brick.

A simple and effective solution would be to use a product like Selleys No More Gaps Bricks and Mortar Gap Filler. It comes in a few colours, and the off-white version should blend in quite well with your mortar, and reasonably with the bricks too, even though they’re a bit lighter in colour. This product is designed for external gaps and is flexible enough to cope with small movements in walls.

For the deeper gaps, like the one alongside the window frame, I’d recommend pushing some foam backing rod into the gap first. This helps to fill out the space so you’re not wasting filler and ensures the sealant sits in place properly. Once the foam is in, you can apply the filler over the top.

While you could use mortar mix to fill the joints, colour-matching can be difficult, and for small gaps, the gap filler is a much simpler and more user-friendly option, especially if you're just starting out.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
