How to fill gap between floor and wall - skirting board?

Hi,

Looking for some help on this job.

There is a large gap between floorboards and wall.

Wondering what we can do. Gap far too large for gap filler. Was thinking about skirting board but floorboards make it really hard to nail into.

Any tips on doing this job? There are many spots similar around the house but this is most prominent. Length is 322mm for this particular spot.

Hi @James_M,

Generally speaking, you should not use a gap filler at junctions between walls and floors as they expand and contract on different planes, so any filler will likely crack or fail prematurely.

The best way to manage gaps like this is to scribe the skirting board into the floor so that it accounts for any undulations in the flooring. You can see in the photos of the Tracer Proscribe marking a cut line for the technique I am referring to.

Once the line is marked, you can cut along the line to have a skirting board that sits perfectly against the flooring. As I'm sure you can imagine, this is a fairly high-level carpentry technique which is not easy for a beginner, but it will give you the cleanest finish.

An easier solution is to attach quad along the bottom of the skirting board to bridge the gap. It should be attached with a combination of brad nails and Liquid Nails then the top edge should be caulked with No More Gaps before painting.
