I have deeply deeply recessed mortar on brick walls inside house . I won’t to fill in level with brick surface . What’s best product to use to fill in gap
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @HopeAg. It's amazing to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about filling mortar joints.
For filling in those deeply recessed mortar joints and bringing them level with the face of the brick, the best product to use is fresh mortar.
Before applying new mortar, make sure the joints are clean and free from dust or loose material. Lightly misting the area with water can also help the new mortar adhere properly, especially if the bricks are particularly dry.
To apply the mortar neatly and effectively, it’s worth picking up a tuck-pointing trowel — it’s a narrow, flat tool designed for pressing mortar deep into joints. For deeper gaps like yours, it’s best to fill them in layers, allowing each layer to firm up slightly before adding the next, to prevent cracking or shrinkage.
Once the mortar is applied and smoothed off flush with the brick face, let it cure fully. Depending on the look you’re after, you can lightly sponge the joints to blend them or leave them with a clean trowelled finish for contrast.
If you'd like to colour-match the mortar to your existing bricks for a more seamless look, there are oxide additives that can be mixed in.
