How to fix Lockwood Legge 990MF lock?

The Lockwood Lock that has Legge and 990MF on the outside no longer locks via key or by the turn latch. It was starting to stick a few weeks ago then just gave up locking altogether. It sort of locks when I turn the latch but if I try and turn the handle a few times it will eventually unlock. I have taken the mechanism apart as far as I could. I must admit I don't know how to remove the key lock and turning mechanism so I may need help with that if I need to take it out.

I have followed some vague instructions by using some WD40 and blown some air into the mechanism and around it to clear out any dust.

The lock itself is inside so doesn't get hit by any elements and it is only 4 years old.

Any ideas as to how to fix, please let me know?  Attached are some pictures. I also have some videos but I'm not going down the YouTube route as suggested when I try to upload them.

Re: Lockwood Legge 990MF lock doesn't lock any more!

Hi @Sofashaw,

I’m not finding any reference to Lockwood when searching the model number 990MF. The “SS” typically refers to stainless steel, but with that code I’m seeing results for an entirely different brand, and nothing that matches Lockwood’s current range. Are you certain this is a Lockwood door lock? If it does turn out to be a Lockwood lock, they might have used a mortice mechanism inside that is from another brand, which could explain the mismatch in the code issue.

Regardless of the manufacturer, there usually isn’t a great deal inside a door lock that can be repaired once it stops functioning correctly. Unless there’s a specific internal component that can be replaced and ordered directly from the manufacturer, it’s often more practical to replace the entire lock.

Do you happen to have the original receipt or know where the lock was purchased? If it was from Bunnings, Lockwood products are covered by a substantial warranty, and we may be able to help organise a replacement in store.

For now, I’d recommend taking the model number stamped on the side of the mechanism and doing a quick online search to confirm the correct manufacturer. That should help you find the relevant installation manual or support contact for parts.

If you could share a front view of the fully assembled lock, that might help identify the correct model and confirm what you’re working with.

Alternatively, if you decide to replace it altogether, you could pick up a new door lock and make use of the Bunnings Door Lock Installation Service to have it fitted for you.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: Lockwood Legge 990MF lock doesn't lock any more!

Hi,

It was actually a Legge model which was manufactured by Allegion (the handle was made by Lockwood). The Allegion technical help was nothing short of brilliant and I managed to use them to extract the cylinders, open the lock up and find a small obstruction that was stopping the lock from closing!

Case closed - thanks for the quick response as well.
