I sanded back and painted this coat hanger but the dog has chewed one of the timber hooks. Any chance I can get a replacement timber piece or fix the chewed hooks with wood dough?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @jennifercornwal. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a coat hanger.
That's so frustrating, especially after you've done such a great job of restoring the hanger.
Fortunately, you’ve got two good options here for repairing the chewed peg. The first is to replace it entirely. To do this, you’ll need to cut the damaged peg off flush with the backing board and then sand the area flat. The neatest repair would be to drill a hole in the board the same size as your new dowel and glue it into position using PVA wood glue. This will give you a solid connection similar to how the original peg was fixed. As an alternative, and slightly less strong method, you could screw through the backing board from the rear into the end of the new peg. Using glue in combination with the screw will help improve stability.
The second option is to repair the existing peg using wood filler. Start by sanding the damaged peg so that none of the chewed timber fibres are left sticking out. Then apply the wood filler to the peg by gradually building up the layers until there’s enough material in place to recreate the original shape. Once the filler has dried, you can sand it smooth and round it off to match the rest of the pegs before repainting. This method won’t be quite as strong as replacing the peg, but it will still work well and save you from having to install a new one.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
