How to match wood stain colour?

Hello
I am looking at doing a DIY (with my husband's assistance) to created an extension off a side console we currently have! We are aware that we are using a different timber, however want to stain it to be as similar as possible. This unit is American oak.800Wx800H-null.jpegScreenshot 2025-05-15 at 7.12.45 pm.pngIMG_7016.jpegIMG_7014.jpegIMG_7017.jpeg

We are looking to use: Dar prime premium wood from Bunnings for this structure
I would love some assistance on
- what stain we would use, does this would need anything before we stain it (ie prime ect).
- Also do you stain before or after building the item.

Re: Wood Stain Colouring

Hello @Stephjane

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about matching the stain of your existing console.

What a beautifully planned extension, I can already see how good it will look once installed. I propose visiting your local store and looking at the stain sample board in the paint department. There you'll see what the stains look like when applied to timber. Getting a perfect match will not be possible, but you can get very close by applying several coats to get close to the tone of the American Oak. Unfortunately, phone pictures can't be used as a reference as they don't reproduce the real colour of your console.

If you can bring a drawer front or panel with you, the paint specialist can advise you which stain to use to achieve a close finish. In regards to your other question, it best to assemble the extension first before you stain the surface of the timber.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
