How to mosaic a round timber side table top?

Hey there everyone,

My question is has anyone done a mosaic on a round timber side table top and if you have can you please throw some ideas and materials my way as I am going to make a small art table for my 10yr old nieces birthday. I have done mosaics before but many many years ago. I need to know everything pretty please, for example... After sanding what do I do? What is the best glue/grout/tools? Does anyone have design ideas for what I can put on the art table (my niece is 10 if I didn't mention that earlier) ect.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

You might like to start by checking out @analister96's Upcycled mosaic table and @lifestylebymari's Upcycled mosaic tile table for some inspiration and guidance on the process and materials used.

Start by sanding the timber surface smooth so the glue and tiles adhere properly, then wipe away any dust. You can start with 80 Grit Sandpaper to remove roughness as well as any surface contaminants, such as dirt or oils. You should then move up to a finer grit, such as 180 Grit Sandpaper to further smooth and prepare the surface.

You should then seal the wood with a primer or sealer to prevent moisture from the adhesive or grout from seeping into the timber and causing warping. This British Paints White 4 In 1 Prep Water Based Primer Sealer Undercoat would be a good option.

Since this is for a 10-year-old girl, consider a fun, playful design—bright colours, simple shapes, flowers, stars, or even her initials would make it personal and appealing. You can shape your tiles to suit your design using tile nippers.

For adhesive, many mosaic artists use a strong PVA-based glue such as Selleys Aquadhere PVA Wood Glue Interior Adhesive for indoor projects, though tile adhesive such as this Dunlop Wall And Floor Tile Adhesive can be used if you want extra durability.

Once your tiles are glued in place and dry, you’ll need grout. This Dunlop Flexible Coloured Grout comes in a variety of colours and would be perfect for this application.

Apply the grout with a grout float, pushing it into all the gaps, then wipe off the excess with a damp sponge before it dries.

Good Afternoon @Tulani

Mmmmm I havnt done any mosaicing but have admired it. Apart from @JacobZ 's suggestions, maybe a straight edge around the table top using some kind of angle? Aluminium Angles will show you a few different types.

Would love to see the project unfold! Please take a bunch of photos and consider it 🙂
