How to paint a Hume Duracote external door?

We recently installed a new back door. We purchased British Paints 4 seasons Brunswick Green Low Sheen Exterior Paint which states no primer needed on most surfaces. After doing some research i see a lot of people having issues with paint peeling off the duracote. We had planned to just sand the face of the door and then paint as we are trying to complete this DIY as inexpensive as possible however i'm now concerned we will end up needing to start over if we paint without a primer.

Hi @shay1,

I would always recommend using a primer on Duracote doors, regardless of what paint is used.

As they will be exposed to the weather, and not all sides come with the green primer, there is a tendency for water to get into the underside of the door and cause the paint to delaminate.

The easiest way to reduce the risk of this happening is to apply a coat of a sealing undercoat, such as this British Paints White 4 In 1 Prep Water Based Primer Sealer Undercoat, before applying 2-3 coats of your paint.

For a slightly higher up-front cost, you will be protecting your door better and reducing maintenance costs in the long term.

Hello @shay1

Yes, just a light sanding of the surface to remove any stray timber splinters that may be still present. Please make sure to wipe the surface clean before you start painting the door.
