Hello @Liz25
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your walls.
Before you begin, I suggest having your walls tested for asbestos before sanding them. If the results are positive, you'll need the services of an asbestos removal specialist. If the results are negative, you can continue with your painting project.
If you have a non-standard plasterboard wall and that the consistency and finish of a laminate surface, I suggest using Dulux 4L PRECISION White Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer. It is specially formulated to bond to a variety of tough-to-paint surfaces that typically resist coatings. For the top coat, I recommend Dulux 4L Vivid White Low Sheen Wash&Wear Interior Paint. It gives a stain-resistant, low-sheen finish on walls and ceilings, as well as doors, windows, skirting, architraves, cornices, steelwork and shelving. It is recommended for use in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and rumpus rooms.
In regards to the joiners and timber covers, I don't recommend removing them as they are integral to the wall assembly and without them the wall panels will not be able to be joined properly.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thank you for your help. Can you tell me how to paint over the stained wood, without it turning yellow,as it looks very dated.I want to paint it white or similar..thanx
Hi @Liz25
The timber piece will need to be sanded back to wood and the stain that's on it totally removed. I then suggest covering it with either a Zinsser or Dulux primer with a stain blocking feature just to be sure that its totally sealed. The paint and primer I've suggested are all water-based and will therefore not turn yellow unlike oil-based paints.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
