How to remove lead paint?

Hi,

I have lead paint on the exterior of my house and was looking for advice on how to remove it. I have done some research, but was wondering there is any other information or people who have advice

Thanks!

Re: Lead Paint

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @bq308. It's a pleasure to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about dealing with lead paint.

How much of the exterior of your house is painted with this lead-based paint? Is there any reason why you'd like to remove it rather than painting over and encapsulating it? If you do paint over it, as little preparation as possible in the way of sanding should be done, and appropriate PPE must be worn.

Here's a handy Australian government guide, which details methods of dealing with lead-based paint. It's recommended that any removal of lead-based paint be done by a contractor with lead paint management training.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: How to remove lead paint?

I heard about "BLUE BEAR® Lead Out™ Lead-Based Paint Stripper" as being the best to remove lead-based paint. I got some steel window frames in an old house that need repainting. Any suggestions where I could buy this? Bunnings doesn't seem to carry it.

Re: How to remove lead paint?

Hello @Alfie1

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us.

I'm sorry but I am unfamiliar with the Blue Bear paint stripper. However, I have been speaking to the technical department of Poly and have inquired if Poly 1L Polystrippa Paint Stripper - 1L would strip off lead paint. They said yes, but it will take several applications to totally remove the lead- based paint. Please remember to take all necessary safety precautions in regards to removing and handling lead-based paint. Please make sure to wear personal protection such as disposable coveralls, gloves, goggles and a heavy-duty paint rated filter mask.

Here's a handy Australian government guide, which details methods of dealing with lead-based paint. It's recommended that any removal of lead-based paint be done by a contractor with lead paint management training.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
