Re: How to remove sunken headless nail from old timber

Hi @ELI5,

From the marks in the timber, these look far more like construction staples than headless nails. They are the same type used on pallets, where two prongs are driven in at once, and the crown sits beneath the surface. That would explain why you cannot see a head to grab onto.

If the aim is simply to break the panel down, the easiest approach is to get a wrecking bar in behind the boards and lever them off the rail, which will pull the staples out of the vertical timber at the back. If you are not planning to reuse the boards, you can even cut through them first, which makes levering much simpler. If, however, you need to keep the boards intact and remove the staples from the face, that becomes difficult because the crown of the staple is buried quite deep. There is no clean way to extract them without damaging the surface. In some situations, you can cut down the back between the board and the rail with a metal cutting blade to free the staples. If you can let us know what you are trying to achieve with the panel, we can suggest the best method for your situation.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Then it would be best to start by levering off the front panels with a wrecking bar @ELI5. Hopefully, once they are removed, you'll be able to find the fixings that hold the whole panel in place.
