How to remove water stain on timber floors?

Hello,

in some desperate need of advice. Currently renting and my cats used some cloth boxes as a litter in the spare room which went unnoticed as it is rarely used. We have tried pet urine removed, vinegar and bicarb soda, and even sandpaper and lacquer. It doesn’t appear to be lifting so really looking for some last chance suggestions on how to fix the problem. The floors are older, nailed in so we can’t just replace the sections it would be a whole floor job.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid the moisture from the cloth box has damaged the surface of the timber. The only way to remove the stain is to sand the floor down. Wha you are technically seeing are the dead fibres of the wood that has tuned grey then black as it is slowly decomposing. This timber rot can travel quite deep into the wood depending on how long the moisture has been trapped there.

I recommend engaging the services of a timber floor restoration specialist and getting a quote for the repair. It would generally involve sanding the damaged section and then a new stain sealer placed over the sanded section. The difficult part is getting a similar stain in the same shade.
