How to renovate my home?

Hello there,

I am planning to renovate an old house, removing walls to have more space for bathroom, joining two beds to one, renovating the kitchen, changing floors, lights and painting the entire interior. I am unsure whether it needs a designer ti redesign the layout, and additional approval from council as I am not entering the house. Appreciate if someone can guide me me.

Structural walls support the weight of the building above, so you need professional advice to avoid any major issues. A designer or architect can also help you make the most of your space and create a layout that feels natural and works well for your needs.

When it comes to joining two bedrooms to make a larger bathroom or a bigger space, it’s worth considering the impact it could have on your property’s value. While having a more spacious, modern bathroom is a real bonus for livability, reducing the number of bedrooms — say from three down to two — can sometimes make a home less appealing to future buyers. It’s a balance between creating the home you want to live in and keeping an eye on potential resale value down the track.

As for approvals, even though you’re not extending the footprint of the house, you’ll still need to check with your local council. Internal renovations like removing walls, changing room layouts, or altering plumbing often require building approval, depending on what’s involved.
