How to repaint timber balcony railing and painted deck?

Wanting to update and repaint the timber railing around our upper balcony and the railing and decking on the small one. Have never done anything like this before. Obviously they all need a solid clean down but then I’m unsure if I need to sand and paint with a primer first or if there’s one product that will cover that. The existing paint is in good condition ie not peeling or lifting. Planning a dark heritage style blue on the railings but wanted to use a different colour for the decking. Unsure if there’s one product that will work for both or if I need a different product for the decking. All advice welcome. Not wanting to sand back and stain/oil the decking. Pics attached and can take more if it’s helpful

Re: Repaint timber balcony railing and painted deck

Hello @NikkiB4

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your balcony railing and deck.

The general preparation for your railing and decking surface are generally similar. The surface will need to be sanded down back to wood so that any paint or stain applied to it will be properly absorbed by the timber surface and thereby producing a uniform finish. Poor preparation will result in uneven absorption and a patchy finish.

For the handrail I suggest using a primer such as Dulux 1Step Prep Primer, Sealer & Undercoat 4L. It is possible to use ordinary exterior paint for the railing, but this will not work for the deck. For the deck I suggest using standard decking stain/oil or Cabot's 4L Brown Timbercolour Deck And Exterior Paint. The Cabot's decking paint come in different colours so make sure to ask the paint specialist for the colour of your choice.

I suggest having a look at these amazing deck revamps shared by our Workshop members:
