How to replace downlights?

Hi, one of my downlight

has stopped working and I have realised that the type of downlighting is no longer in supply. It is a 90mm Viewlight-Beautifully Efficient downlight. Is there a way I can change this downlight to new downlights available or will I need to call an electrician to change the downlight settings.

It looks like your downlight operates on 240V and has a specific power plug that isn’t universal—similar to an IEC C13 to C14 connection. In some cases, the lead and plug may run back to a power point in the ceiling, allowing you to swap it out for a compatible model like the Ledvance 8W 240V 700-800lm Fixed Tri-Colour LED Downlight, which comes with a cord and plug attached.

However, if the existing downlight is hardwired rather than plugged into a power point, you’ll need a licensed electrician to replace it. They can also help find a new light that closely matches your existing ones. If you're unsure about the wiring, it’s best to get a professional to assess the setup and ensure a safe installation.

Hi again @ZainabR,

I'm just taking another look at the unit, and I note the four finger grips on the front of the globe bezel. Can you try turning the bezel a quarter turn anti-clockwise? That might remove the front face and expose a globe that can be replaced—that is, of course, if you didn't already know that the entire unit has failed.

I thought it was a contained unit with no replaceable globe, but now I think there might be a blown globe.

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you for your advice. I did have a go and turned it anticlockwise. But I cannot see how I can remove the globe. The 2 parts that separated out were the front plate and globe unit. Unless there is a way to remove the globe from the unit. I have attached the images for your reference. Thanks for your assistance.

Hello @ZainabR

If you look closely at the downlight unit, you'll see a definite line between the top section and lower section. I propose firmly holding onto the top section with your left hand and grabbing the bottom section and turning it anticlockwise while keeping the top section in place. I'm in agreement with Mitchell that there is possibly a light bulb that can be replaced. Give it another go and tell me if it comes apart. If it does, you should be able to tell if the bulb can be replaced.

Thanks Eric, I did try to separate the globe from the unit by turning it anti-clockwise, but unfortunately it does not turn. It’s either jammed or I am not doing it right. I will have to replace the entire delight unit in this case.

Hi Eric, I managed to remove the top section of the down light as shown in the image. Is this the bulb that is exposed here. Can you please let me know which LED bulb can I use as a replacement here.

Thanks for your persistence, @ZainabR. Unfortunately, that confirms that it's a unit with a non-replaceable globe. You'll need an electrician to install a new light fitting.
