How to replace front door sill?

Hi,

I’m in need of replacing my front door, both the entrance door and security door. However although the doorway seems to be a standard size, the threshold/sill seems to be not typical from what i can tell and it has an oversized security door (2060mm high) and the front door (standard size) has an extra seal underneath to make it fit.

Im trying to avoid the cost of the custom security screen and door. Is the current sill/threshold correct or have the original installers done something wrong. Is there a way i can replace the base to allow standards size doors to fit? Is there another way to approach this that I haven’t thought about it

 thanks

 Benjamin

Re: Replacing front door sill/threshold

Hi @Nebin,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Everything seems to be installed correctly; however, the 2060mm tall security door is a bit out of the ordinary and like you said, is likely custom.

Removing the sill to replace it with something thicker would be rather difficult, as the door jamb sits on top of it, meaning the door jamb would need to be removed to enable the sill to be removed. If you went to that extent, you would be better off just replacing the whole door jamb. It would much easier to simply attach a piece of timber to the top of the door frame to bring the head of the frame down slightly.

As standard doors are designed for frames that are 2040mm tall, assuming the door is a standard width, the simplest solution I can think of is to nail a piece of timber to the head of the frame to reduce the height of the opening.

Something like this 110 x 18mm H3 Pine could work, depending on the thickness of the door jamb. It could be cut to length, then screwed up into the existing head of the frame.

With this 18mm reduction, a door designed for a 2040mm tall opening would be much more usable. You will still need to use a Door Bottom Seal to ensure the weather is kept out, but it would better enable you to use standard doors.

Let me know what you think, and if you have any reason why you don't think this would work, please let me know so I can relook at things.

Jacob
