I want to restore our front door and door frame. Someone has previously patch a gap in the door moulding on the left hand side and I would like to improve on that. Should I replace the entire moulding on that side or try to patch it somehow. Where would I get a matching moulding? It is about 10cm wide. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi @AndrewT,
It’ll be very difficult to find an exact match for that moulding, especially if it’s old or custom. Your best bet is probably to remove the existing patch and recreate the missing section using Builder’s Bog. It’s a two-part filler that sets rock hard and can be shaped and sanded just like timber.
Start by carefully removing the patch that’s already there. Once it’s out, clean up the area so the filler can bond well. Mix up the Builder’s Bog, then apply it to the missing section, shaping it roughly to match the original moulding. Do this in a few applications to build up the area and try not to apply too much proud of the surface.
Once it’s fully cured, you can sand it back to match the surrounding profile more accurately. A bit of care here makes a huge difference. After that, it’s just a matter of priming and painting, and it should blend in nicely.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
