How to test what paint has been used previously?

Hi,

I am a mum of two boys and new to DIY Bunnings. Need some advice please:

How would I know if my doors are already painted with oil, water or semi oil paint as I need to strip off the old paint?

And also shall I re paint doors as well for an 11 year old house or just the walls would be enough? My friend said once you paint walls U might think about doors - but I am confused as it is a big task for a beginner.

Could you guys please advise.

Painting is one of the easiest D.I.Y. projects yet can have a dramatic impact. Good on you for getting the ball rolling.

You can do a quick test to find out if you have an oil-based or water-based paint on your doors. Grab a clean rag and some methylated spirits. Dip the end of the rag into the spirits and wipe the surface of the door. If the paint comes off it is a water-based paint. If it does not come off, it is an oil-based paint. Typically people use oil-based for doors and skirting boards as they tend to dry harder and are more durable.

The Bunnings guide How to paint a door is a great resource before tackling the project. Typically you don't need to strip the old paint off. As long as the paint is well adhered, you can just paint over the top after a light sand. It is only when the paint is flaking off that more drastic preparation work is required. Feel free to share some photos of the condition of your doors if you would like some help on what preparation to do, or whether they need repainting at all.

Before starting work on the walls, check out our guide How to paint like a professional by experienced member @Peggers. I note that the wall in your photo has a mark. This might be able to be removed with some sugar soap or a magic eraser. The Bunnings guide How to clean your walls might be helpful.

I have plenty of painting to do around the house and the key is to break it down into manageable smaller projects so you don't feel overwhelmed. I think you will find painting is relatively easy, and get motivation for how much fresher a room can seem after a couple of new coats.
