How to patch hole around water pipe?

Hi folks,

My current task is to patch this hole that is around a water pipe sticking out of the wall. I saw some similar posts on here about holes and even a video by a Bunnings team member but thought the process might be a a bit different due the the exposed piping?

Any advice would be well appreciated.

🙂 Think I found your next project. When you say patch, you are wanting to mortar around the pipe to be smooth with your wall? With the water pipe still poking out?

I was trolling through products as you do 🙂 This one seems to fit the bill Selleys Gap Filler 435g Spakfilla Heavy Duty Interior And Exterior but I would wait for @EricL or @JacobZ as they will know more details on what to use.

Yes, that's correct. Mortar around the pipe to be smooth with the wall, with pipe still poking out.

Hi @TJP,

The Spakfilla Heavy Duty Interior And Exterior that @Dave-1 has mentioned would work well.

Make sure you start by cleaning up the patch with a soft-bristle brush to remove any dust.

Once clean, apply the filler with the provided spatula or a joint knife. For applications 2mm thick, it is recommended to give it 2-3 hours to dry, with thicker applications requiring longer. Depending on the depth of the hole, you will more than likely need to do it in layers, giving them plenty of time to dry before applying the next.

When the patch is flush with the rest of the wall, give it a sand with a sanding sponge before priming and painting to match the surrounding wall.

🙂 Tho I do had sanding down plaster. The less high points on teh final coats the less sanding you will have to do. Going well, Depending on the weather when I was filling holes the wait time before the next coat would extend longer then I expected as a heads up.

Yes, I've noticed how much the weather has affected curing times. Certain spots are still spongy and I did the plastering on Saturday. Maybe tomorrow (Tuesday) it will be ready for its final application.

Finally managed to get the third and final coat of the wall done. It's not completely flush with the wall. I was advised to use a fine sanding stone, from paint shop, could I use a medium to make it sit more flush?

Hello @TJP

My best advice is to allow the patch to dry completely before you start sanding it down. Did you use Spak filler to fill the hole? I recommend using 180grit sandpaper in combination with a UNi-PRO Cork Sanding Block to give you a flat finish.

Yes, I used spak filler heavy-duty to fill the hole.

Will swing by Bunnings to pick up the 180 grit and cork sanding block.
