What sealant to keep raw wood look?

Hi. I've recently sanded back this dining table and want to seal it in a way that keeps the raw wood look, isn't shiny, and doesn't turn it orange or yellow. Should I use an oil, wax, or a waterbased polyurethane? Any suggestions for specific products? Thanks so much!

To preserve the raw wood look of your dining table without adding unwanted shine or altering its colour, you have a few options depending on your priorities. Beeswax is a natural and traditional finish that provides a soft, matte appearance and is excellent for maintaining a natural, raw look. It is easy to apply, repair, and reapply if the table gets scratched or worn over time. Beeswax also offers a silky texture to the wood and is non-toxic, making it ideal for surfaces where food may come into contact.

However, it does not provide as strong a protective layer against moisture and stains as other finishes, so it may require more frequent maintenance, especially on a dining table.

On the other hand, Cabot's Satin Water-Based Sealer is a fantastic choice for a low-sheen, modern finish that protects the wood while maintaining its natural appearance. Being water-based, it resists yellowing over time, unlike some oil-based finishes. It dries quickly, has low odour, and is easy to clean up. This product creates a durable barrier against moisture and stains, making it practical for a high-use surface like a dining table. Its satin finish ensures the table does not look overly glossy while still being well-protected.

When finishing your table, start by sanding the surface smoothly and removing all dust with a tack cloth or damp microfiber cloth. If using beeswax, apply it sparingly with a lint-free cloth, working it into the wood grain in circular motions. Buff the surface thoroughly after application to achieve an even finish.

For Cabot's Satin Water-Based Sealer, use a quality synthetic brush or applicator pad for even coverage. Apply thin coats, lightly sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (around 240-grit) between coats for the best results. Allow ample drying time between applications as per the product instructions.

To further enhance the table’s natural look, consider using a clear wood primer before sealing if the wood has a tendency to absorb unevenly or if you’re worried about any blotchiness. Additionally, work in a well-ventilated space and on a day with minimal humidity to ensure a smooth, professional finish.
